A Popular Choice For Children
A Popular Choice For Children
One of the most common uses for games is the entertainment of children. Children’s games are among the most popular in the world and tend to influence the way adults think and act. A game is generally a structured type of play, usually undertaken only for fun or entertainment, and at times used as a teaching tool. Games are distinctly different from work, which typically is carried out for monetary remuneration, and from fine arts, which are more typically an expression of artistic or aesthetic elements. While most games involve some degree of skill, many games can be played without even being prepared to take an abstract approach.
Two of the most popular games include Microsoft Word (a spreadsheet application) and Tetris, a popular computer game. Chris Crawford, author of the book Computer Games, gives the following definition of a game: “A game is any interactive tool that stimulates thought and action through the use of tools, including computer games.” In other words, computer games are games that require no special skills or knowledge in order to play. Computer games were initially associated with the arcade, but the term has since expanded to include video games, console games, handheld games, board games, word games, musical instruments, and computer-aided design (CAD) applications.
In the twenty first century, computer games have increasingly become integrated into mainstream media such as television, cinema, comics, music, animation, and more. Computer games have become such a part of our everyday lives that it is difficult to imagine life without them. In fact, some researchers believe that computer games are responsible for the decrease in crime rates over the past twenty years. Chris Crawford further states, “Gamas are now the safest place in which to spend money”, thus proving just how important games are to our everyday lives.
