Types of Games

A game is typically a structured form of playing, normally undertaken for fun or entertainment, and at times used as a teaching tool. Games are quite different from work, which usually are carried out to remuneration, and from arts, which are normally more of an expression of personal or aesthetic elements. In most cases, games fall into one of four main categories: games for fun and/or entertainment, games for education and assessment, war games, and games based on the real world. A major part of computer gaming involves role playing games, wherein the player assumes the role of a character in order to engage in the actions and scenarios typical of that character. In other words, the player goes through the steps necessary to achieve a set goal, while interacting with a cast of characters that have their own thoughts and motivations.

Wars, on the other hand, is usually associated with war games’ use of dice and counters, with the players taking turns determining who will be the first to arrive at a designated destination, complete with a given number of troops. Another major type of board game is to construct a civilization, where players are tasked to build cities, create settlements, and then defend them from attacks made by other civilizations. Other types of games include those that require assembling sets of items using resources such as wood, coal, or metal. Building blocks are the main objective in this kind of game, with each block having different legal properties depending on its shape and type. In many respects, this sub-category is very similar to the construction sub-category.

One of the earliest forms of playing cards was found in ancient Egypt, with clay figures being used to represent the various elements of the sun, such as light, rain, wind, and darkness. Through the ages, playing cards have evolved greatly, with most players now opting to buy complete sets consisting of cardboard pieces (known as chips) and playing cards. There are even dedicated game shops that cater to solely the needs of those who enjoy playing card games. The popularity of these games has not been helped only by the massive commercialization of them, but also by the introduction of numerous popular board games. In fact, many of today’s most popular games derive their inspiration from games played way back during the Stone Age.
