Sports refers to all types of physical activities undertaken for the purpose of recreation, competition, or exercise. Sports is widely defined as any athletic activity which involves a level of physical competition, including basketball or netball. Many types of competitive athletics and some games like hockey are also classified as sports. An individual who practices a sport on a regular basis is often considered a sportsman. The word ‘sport’ can also be used in a non-sport sense, which is to describe a set of activities undertaken for recreation.
A large number of games played in the open air such as soccer, baseball, tennis, cricket, and horse-riding are considered as sports. These games are physically demanding and the physical faculties required to play sports are developed to a high degree. Sports that are performed in sanctioned competitions are carried out by people in their professional lives. Most sportspeople regard sports as their profession, even while participating in recreational sports. Sports are developed by man to satisfy his needs as regards to physical activities. Sports, even during a person’s childhood up to the stage where he gets old, form an integral part of the individual’s life.
Playing sports helps develop some of the vital organs of the body. Sports help develop stamina, muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and coordination. Thus, sports help develop an individual’s overall health.
