Ancient Greece, Rome, and China had their own versions of sports. They included wrestling and gymnastics, but didn’t use motors or have the ability to jump high. In ancient Egypt, there are monuments to the Pharaohs that suggest that sports were well-developed. These include javelin throwing and wrestling. In ancient Persia, there were various forms of sport, including the martial art Zoorkhaneh and jousting.
Michael Brown (2016) defines a sport as an “aggressive physical event where one team attempts to stop the other from scoring.” The term “sport” is sometimes used in a wider sense than this. The University of Chicago’s definition of a sport includes track and field competitions, gymnastics, and ice events, but excludes golf, archery, and markmanship. It’s important to note that Michael Brown’s definition is rather broad, and it doesn’t include the more specific details of these events.
