What Is Beauty?

Beauty is defined as the aesthetic quality of certain physical features that makes these aesthetic objects enjoyable to see. Such objects may include sunsets, landscapes, art and humans. Beauty, along with beauty and taste, is an important part of aesthetics, another of the major branches of science. It can also be defined as the attitude we have towards beauty.

The most common definition of beauty according to the Collins dictionary is beauty as an attractive or satisfying result of our physical nature. However, this definition may vary according to the different cultures around the world. For example, Greek philosophy considered beauty to be the result of a harmonious balance between the body, mind and spirit and a physical beauty achieved through physical prowess. In many Eastern cultures beauty is considered to be a major source of personal power. For example, in India a person is considered beautiful if he or she is tall and slim, clean and well groomed and possessed of great wisdom and strength.

According to the Turkish word “ilette” means “seized by youth”. Therefore, a person who is considered beautiful in Turkey is someone who is not tied up with age and past social conditioning. Some other people consider beauty to be in the eyes of the beholder – it is only beauty which is seen by the eyes of the beholder. Others believe that beauty lies in the eyes. And lastly, others believe that beauty is a feeling that can be expressed through words.
