This is because most games involve some sort of competitive action, and the interaction between two or more virtual characters is often based on the recognition of certain standards by the participants, who may be referred to as players, and the attempt to beat these competitors. The existence of other players provides a source of social interaction that can go beyond the interpersonal level, beyond the direct experience of the physical world. Although most players interact only with the avatars of the characters in a given virtual environment, they also may correspond with players outside the world, or even with other entire virtual communities.
The possibility of shared interaction is what makes multiplayer games so appealing. Not only does the presence of other players provide a source of social interaction, but their shared experience can serve as a source of new content that players will want to explore. New content can be gained through various means such as through achievements or through promotions, or through the purchase of new games, accessories, or game packages. In many cases, microtransactions are used to provide players with additional content that cannot be obtained any other way.
