The Difference Between Physical Activity and Sport

Sports (or sports) consists of various types of usually strenuous physical activity that, through organised or casual participation, attempt to use, develop or maintain particular physical skill and ability while also providing participants, and sometimes, spectators, with entertainment. Sports can be both competitive and non-competitive, but the most common type of sports activity is associated with contact sports such as football or rugby. However, there are several other types of sports, including fencing, field hockey, ice skating, racquetball, swimming, basketball, rugby, soccer, tennis, golf and softball, to mention a few. There are many different ways in which to compete or watch sports and most people take part in some form of sports activity during their daily life.

Some sports can be quite physically demanding and, for this reason, need a great deal of fitness and endurance, as well as an equally great deal of skill and agility. However, many people are not interested in this type of sport and instead choose something that requires them to use their minds. For example, many people who play computer games or use video consoles would not be classified as sportspeople by most traditional sports organizations, but many young people like to play video games and take part in the interactive aspects of these gaming consoles and television shows. Engaging in any form of intellectual or skill enhancing sport has enormous health benefits and can even help to protect against certain diseases such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, it has been shown that engaging in sport can reduce the risk of certain types of heart disease and strokes.

There are many reasons why engaging in sport is beneficial, but there are also numerous reasons why it can be bad. Sports can be mindless and repetitive, can cause unnecessary injury and strain on muscles, tendons and ligaments, can create psychological problems such as stress, depression, anxiety and anger, can create poor dietary choices and can cause a variety of other health problems. In order to be truly effective and beneficial, sports must be performed in a controlled environment where equipment and health precautions are carefully monitored and enforces to ensure safety.
