The Benefits of Sports for Young People


Sports provide social benefits for young people. The world is a smaller place than it used to be, and adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable. Many of them feel that their bodies are only of use if they attract boys. Statistics from the Women’s Sport Foundation show that participating in athletics and physical activity helps young women tremendously. For instance, girls who participate in school athletics are 92 percent less likely to try drugs or get pregnant, and they’re three times more likely to graduate from college.

Games, whether organized or amateur, can be categorized as sports. The word “sport” is a general term for competitive physical activity. A competition aims to improve the physical abilities of participants, as well as provide entertainment and health benefits for spectators. Hundreds of different types of sports exist, including competitions between a single contestant and many others. Similarly, some games may involve several competing athletes at one time, while others can feature hundreds of participants at a time.
