What Is Beauty?

According to the philosopher Plato, beauty is an ideal quality, or it can represent one class of aesthetic values. A work of art or aesthetic object is beautiful when it is rendered in an appealing manner. Although the term “beauty” is often used to signal quality, it has far broader meaning today. It is a word that signifies more than symmetry or a person’s personal aesthetic sense. Similarly, beauty is not a value judgment, but a subjective appraisal based on the qualities of an art object.

In addition to aesthetic qualities, beauty also involves a variety of aspects, which satisfy the eye and the sense of sight. Whether it is the symmetry of a woman’s face or her age, a piece can be considered beautiful. Other factors that contribute to a person’s ‘beautifulness’ can include body shape and weight, as well as cultural and societal values. A beautiful song may be more appealing than a beautiful face, but the content of its message is not what makes it beautiful.

As an adjective, beauty can be used in plural. In different cases, beauty carries a greater or lesser weight. Its relevance depends on the individuality of the work, but it generally suggests a high level of worth. It contrasts with pretty, conventional style, and the absence of bizarre elements. In general, beauty is not used as a universal criterion for evaluating a work, but instead as a subjective judgment of how well it appeals to viewers.
