The Growing Presence of Games in Society
A game is generally a structured form of interactive play, normally undertaken for amusement or relaxation, and at times also used as an educational tool. Games are very different from work, which typically is undertaken for remuneration, though sometimes the output is sometimes used simply as an expression of artistic or aesthetic impressions. A game, on the other hand, is typically an interactive activity carried out with the intention of having fun or winning some kind of reward, although often the outcomes of games are unexpected. Games are generally played for relaxation or diversion, however recently there has been an increasing interest in them as a recreational activity. The entertainment value of games has increased as technology has advanced, making the creation of games more complex and involving more sophisticated programming, although most people play games for relaxation or to relieve stress.
One major change in the realm of games has been their increasing use as a medium of communication. Video games have been found to be especially beneficial in helping the development of social skills and group interaction. For instance, games such as chess, board games, and trivia games such as Jeopardy, greatly help people develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, whereas playing a sport such as football, rugby, or basketball may result in little or no participation from the participants. Computer games such as Tetris have become popular tools for education and development of memory skills. A major drawback with video games, however, is that people are now spending more time than ever before watching television, so that television is now being seen as a viable substitute for playing games.
Another area of growing importance in the field of games is the use of computer and video game technology for creating a variety of interactive experiences. Video games are now used to enhance social interaction, to improve learning, to provide entertainment, and in many cases to interact with others in a virtual community. Computer and video game technology is now so advanced that it is often used to create online games, where players take an active role in creating the virtual experience, building bonds with friends and foes alike. While many people still think of video games as being strictly for children, today’s technology makes it possible for people of all ages to play them.
