A Review of Popular Board Games
A video game is an organized form of interactive play, normally undertaken for fun or entertainment, and occasionally used as a teaching tool. Games are very different from homework, which are typically carried out for personal remuneration, and from fine arts, which have more usually been an expression of artistic or aesthetic elements. Games, on the other hand, may be chosen to fulfill a need (like shooting a game), to teach a subject (like strategy) or to engender a particular type of social interaction (as Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games, or MMORPGs). Also, games are usually designed by game designers rather than by marketers. The developers of most games are the people who actually create the content – their interaction with players is what makes any game distinctive.
Board games are organized around a central theme, usually a fantasy theme (with perhaps a few infrequent references to actual-life medieval times, but rarely to the actual history and geographical areas). These themes are usually drawn from an underlying mythology or culture, with characters usually having traits reflective of that background. For example, a game like the world of Tarot, often used in graduate mathematics classes, usually involves a number of different planes, corresponding to different sections of the tarot spread. Although there are many board games that have evolved from this basis, the two most well-known examples are Chess and Monopoly.
A token is a small thing, plastic or metal, sometimes coated with gold or silver paint, that serves a specific purpose in a game. Most tokens, especially those used in a game like Scrabble, are colorless, although sometimes they may be made with precious stones or metals, like gemstones. They are used either to represent one of the objects involved in the game, or to indicate certain aspects of the board games’ rules, such as which tile a player has captured. However, although they are generally used for aesthetic purposes, the two main categories of tokens are usually used to represent something else entirely, such as points, cards, gems, or other things that may have special significance in the game. The main article on tokens can be found below.
